Your own universe

When you hear the word “universe” what comes to mind? The dominant definition refers to the infinite expanse of outer space, to everything:

noun 1 (the universe) all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos. The universe is believed to be at least 10 billion light years in diameter and contains a vast number of galaxies.

— Oxford Dictionary

Use of the definite article emphasises that it’s the universe, singular.

Etymology of the universe

But let’s not forget the second definition, which somewhat contradicts the first in that it allows multiple universes. Not in the “multiverse” sense (currently being popularised by the latest Spiderman movie), where an infinite set of parallel dimensions may exist, variations on the universe in which we exist – but in the sense that a “universe” may be defined as a context, from the perspective of a particular person or group:

noun 2 a particular sphere of activity or experience: the front parlour was the hub of her universe.
