Masterful plans, carried out by the kids

What the films of the eighties seemed to be telling me, as I understood it back then, was that there was no end to the resourcefulness of children. They were full of kids inventing gadgets to foil adult villains, like in The Goonies; or going on wild bike adventures, as in ET. Those are just two of the well-known ones, but kids winning out against all odds โ€“ย on bikes, critically โ€“ย was a recurring motif in eighties films.

This weekโ€™s piece is about my own childhood in the eighties. It features flax (because itโ€™s set in New Zealand and that stuff is just everywhere), incredibly steep hills, some primary school wolves, and, most importantly, a little read BMX.
