“What?” said Neko.
He was getting to grips with the notion that a single word can take multiple spellings. We were talking about the colour grey.
Before I could get to explaining the niceties of “gray” and “grey”, Neko guessed at the spelling:
“Is it G-A-R-Y?” Neko asked.
“No,” I said, smiling, “that’s the name Gary.” We both laughed.
